Musashi Elite Katana

Sales Pitch (Musashi Elite Katana)

Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the most famous swordmaster in Japanese history, fought more than 60 duels before retiring and writing his famous treatise on swordplay, the “Book of Five Rings”. Development of the two-sword style of swordplay, with the Daito (long sword) and Wakizashi being used together, is credited to Musashi. Mounted in black, the Musashi is faithful to the original down to the famous double-ring iron tsubas. The tsuka-ito is in leather over ray skin. The blade is hand-forged in high-carbon steel, with new geometry to enhance cutting ability. It is edge-tempered using the traditional clay tempering method, resulting in a distinct hamon. Edge hardness is HRC60, back hardness HRC40. The grip is double-pegged to the tang for safety. Supplied with a protective cloth bag and traditional maintenance kit.

Comments

We could not cut with the sword tested and that hurt it's overall rating.  Most reviewers found the leather tsuka-ito (handle wrap) to give a very positive feel.

Practical Plus XL Light Katana

Sales Pitch (Practical Plus XL Light Katana)

The Practical Plus Katana provides a very economical cutting sword as dependable as the Practical Katana, but using more traditional fittings and construction methods. The blade is forged and differentially tempered (HRC60 edge, HRC40 back) and the hamon is prominent. The Practical Plus features genuine Same (Rayskin) on the Tsuka, with a tightly-woven cotton wrap (Tsuka-Ito). The long tang is double-pegged for security. The fittings of the Practical Plus are decorated in a Japanese Dogwood motif with dragon menuki, and the handsome Tsuba is of an iron “sunburst” design with a brass habaki.

Comments

We could not cut with the sword tested and that hurt it's overall rating.  Most reviewers thought the sunburst tsuba was hard on the hands, but did not mind how it looked.  The cotton tsuka-ito was a definite improvement over the slick fake leather of the classic Practical Plus.  It rated well in the Overall Bang for the Buck category.

MartialArtSwords Sunflower Katana

Sales Pitch (MartialArtSwords)

MartialArtSwords.com proudly presents the sun flower katana from standard katana series for serious martial art practitioners and collectors.

The standard katanas are suitable for all range of practitioners, from the beginner to the advanced. The standard katanas are very sturdy and designed to endure many years of heavy duty cutting. These swords will not bend even on badly executed cuts and the blades require very low maintenance.

The main design consideration for the standard katana series is functionality. The blades are made of forged steel and differentially heat treated. The handles are fixed at two points to provide excellent stability. Standard katana can be used to cut bamboo, tatami or even a tree limb.

The scabbard, handle, and tsuba are all hand made and they are perfectly fitted for each sword. The handle is covered with ray skin (Same) and wrapped with cotton or leather. The fuchi-kashira and tsuba are made of brass.

These swords are all NEWLY MADE, not collectible antiques.

  • Blade Length: 69.5cm / 27 inches (excluding habaki) or 72cm / 28 inches (including habaki length)
  • Handle Length: 27cm / 10.5 inches
  • Weight: 1.1 kg
  • Saya (scabbard): Black Kashu Lacquered finish
  • Bo Hi (blood groove): No
  • Habaki: solid brass
  • Menuki: brass
  • Tsuba: heavy solid brass (sun flower)
  • Same: 100% genuine stingray skin
  • Handle Wrap: Cotton

Comments

The very non-Japanese polished brass fittings were unimpressive.  It made the sword look like a cheap wall hanger, but it cut well out of the box.  The thin blade makes it very light and well balanced.  Some reviewers thought it was a bit too light.  The blade is very durable and this particular sword remains in great shape after hard abuse.
